The well-attended academic ceremony attracted an impressive gathering of principal officers of the University, members of Senate, professors from various faculties, provosts, deans, directors, heads of departments, consultants, medical laboratory scientists, physicians, researchers, members of the academic community, students, particularly those of Medical Laboratory Science, and distinguished guests from within and outside Ebonyi State.

The event, hosted by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Daniel C. Nwachukwu, underscored AE-FUNAI’s commitment to promoting research, intellectual discourse and academic excellence through its inaugural lecture series.

Professor Ezimah delivered his lecture on the theme, “The Kingpins in Action and in Distress,” providing an insightful exposition on the indispensable roles of blood cells in sustaining human life and the devastating consequences when their normal functions become impaired.

Drawing from over four decades of teaching, laboratory practice and scientific investigation, the Professor of Haematology and Blood Transfusion Science explained that red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets remain the “kingpins” of the circulatory system because they are central to oxygen transport, immunity, haemostasis and overall human survival.

Using findings from numerous studies conducted across different parts of Nigeria, he examined the burden of anaemia, blood cancers, platelet disorders, iron deficiency, chronic kidney disease, HIV-related haematological abnormalities, maternal health challenges and childhood blood disorders.

He maintained that many life-threatening illnesses are first detected through laboratory investigations, stressing that Medical Laboratory Scientists remain indispensable partners in modern healthcare delivery.

Professor Ezimah therefore called for greater investment in medical laboratory infrastructure, advanced diagnostic equipment, research funding, quality assurance systems, continuous professional development and international collaborations to improve disease diagnosis and patient outcomes in Nigeria.

He also unveiled future research interests, including molecular diagnosis of haematological malignancies, environmental causes of anaemia, iron deficiency before clinical manifestation and the effects of heavy metals on blood quality in mining communities.

Earlier, in a moving citation, the University chronicled Professor Ezimah’s extraordinary life journey, describing him as a scholar whose life has consistently reflected resilience, faith and academic excellence.

Born on June 2, 1958, he survived a traumatic accident immediately after birth when he accidentally slipped from a midwife’s hands before receiving life-saving intervention from missionary physician, Dr. Anthony Olivera, after whom he was named.

The citation also recalled his miraculous survival during a childhood malaria epidemic and his remarkable recovery from a devastating road accident in 2016, which left him with severe brain injuries requiring multiple neurosurgical procedures.

Despite these life-threatening experiences, Professor Ezimah rose to become one of Nigeria’s respected authorities in Haematology and Blood Transfusion Science.

A graduate of the prestigious School of Medical Laboratory Science, University College Hospital, Ibadan, he later obtained a Master’s degree from the University of Nigeria and a Ph.D. from Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma. He is also a Fellow of the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria.

His academic career has been distinguished by outstanding scholarship, having supervised over 236 undergraduate projects, 47 Master’s dissertations and 15 doctoral theses, while mentoring several academics who have attained professorial rank.

In his remarks before the lecture, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Daniel C. Nwachukwu, challenged professors of the University to embrace the culture of inaugural lectures, describing them as one of the highest academic obligations attached to the rank of professor.

He lamented that although AE-FUNAI has existed for nearly fifteen years, only seven inaugural lectures had been delivered, a situation he described as unacceptable for a fast-growing university.

To address the challenge, Professor Nwachukwu announced far-reaching reforms aimed at removing financial burdens associated with inaugural lectures.

He declared that professors are no longer permitted to establish WhatsApp groups or fundraising committees to finance inaugural lectures, explaining that the University would provide official logistics and printing while lecturers would only be expected to offer light refreshments.

According to him, inaugural lectures should remain intellectual engagements where professors account for their scholarly contributions rather than elaborate social ceremonies.

He further disclosed that the University plans to organise at least four inaugural lectures every month in order to encourage more professors to fulfil the academic responsibility.

The event also featured the formal presentation of the University’s inaugural stole on Professor Ezimah as well as the presentation of commemorative awards in recognition of his distinguished contributions to teaching, research and medical science.

As guests rose in applause at the conclusion of the lecture, the atmosphere reflected not only a celebration of one scholar’s remarkable academic journey but also AE-FUNAI’s growing reputation as a university committed to advancing knowledge, fostering impactful research and shaping the future of healthcare through scientific excellence.
