The two bodies, led by Engr. Kenneth Nduma-Uda, Chairman of Council, College of Biomedical Engineering and Technology, gave the commendation during a solidarity visit to Prof. Nnamchiโ€™s office in Abuja. The visit was in respect of his Bill for an Act to establish the Biomedical Engineers and Scientists Registration Council of Nigeria.

The Bill seeks to provide for the regulation, registration, and licensure of biomedical engineers and scientists. It is one of over sixty-seven Bills sponsored by Prof. Nnamchi, Member representing Enugu East/Isi-Uzo Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives.

Engr. Nduma-Uda, who was accompanied on the visit by two other Council members, Engrs. Rebecca Yilmazach and Aliyu Rayyan said the purpose of the visit was to congratulate the lawmaker for initiating the Bill and to express their solidarity with him.

The Council members stressed that when eventually passed, the Bill โ€œwill improve the practice of biomedical engineering, eliminate quackery, ensure patient safety, and effectively support quality healthcare delivery in the country.โ€

The CBET Council Chairman further emphasized the need for the Bill to clearly define the scope of practice of biomedical engineers and scientists, and to distinguish it from other allied health professions in order to prevent jurisdictional conflicts.

In his response, Prof. Nnamchi thanked the delegation for the visit and pledged to do his best to ensure the Bill is concluded before the end of the current 10th Assembly. He disclosed that the Bill has since passed through second reading and was awaiting a public hearing.
