Enugu Police PRO Charges ESUT Students to Reject Cultism, Become Positive Ambassadors

The Public Relations Officer of the Enugu State Police Command, SP Daniel Ndukwe, mnipr, mnisma, has called on students of the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) to shun cultism, drug abuse and other social vices, urging them instead to embrace responsible leadership and become worthy ambassadors of the institution and society.

Ndukwe made the call while delivering the keynote lecture titled “Choices, Character and Consequences: Confronting Cultism and Other Social Vices on Campus” during the inauguration of the newly elected Students’ Union Government (SUG) executives at ESUT.

Congratulating the newly inaugurated SUG leadership, the Police spokesperson described their emergence as more than an electoral victory, saying it represents a call to selfless service, accountability and exemplary leadership. He stressed that true leadership is measured by positive influence, integrity and the ability to inspire others through good conduct.

He urged the student leaders to champion peace, unity, discipline and academic excellence while working closely with the university management and security agencies to combat cultism, drug abuse, examination malpractice, cybercrime and other criminal activities capable of undermining the institution’s academic environment.

Speaking directly to the students, SP Ndukwe reminded them that every undergraduate begins the university journey with dreams and aspirations, but those dreams are ultimately determined by the choices they make. He warned that social vices often presented as shortcuts to success inevitably result in academic failure, damaged reputations, criminal prosecution and, in extreme cases, the loss of lives and promising futures.

He therefore advised students to choose their friends wisely, resist negative peer pressure, uphold integrity and remain focused on their academic and personal development, emphasizing that “today’s choices become tomorrow’s consequences.”

Reaffirming the commitment of the Enugu State Police Command under the leadership of the Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, psc, mspsp, Ndukwe assured the university community of the Command’s continued partnership with ESUT in maintaining a peaceful and secure learning environment.

He further encouraged students to remain law-abiding, security-conscious and to promptly report suspicious persons or criminal activities within and around the campus to the appropriate authorities.

The inauguration ceremony was declared open by the Vice-Chancellor of ESUT, Prof. Aloysius-Michaels Okolie, and was attended by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ernest Chike Nwoha, alongside the Provost, Registrar, University Librarian, Dean of Students Affairs, other principal officers, former SUG executives and a large gathering of students.
