Enugu Announces August 29 Sanitation Exercise, Restricts Movement Along Marathon Routes

The Enugu State Waste Management Authority (ESWAMA) has announced a restriction of movement across designated routes in Enugu metropolis on Saturday, August 29, 2026, as the state observes its monthly environmental sanitation exercise and hosts the Enugu International Marathon.

In a public service announcement, ESWAMA said the monthly sanitation exercise would hold from 6:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on the day.

The restriction, according to the Authority, will affect both pedestrians and motorists using streets and areas designated as routes for the Enugu International Marathon.

Among the affected roads and areas are Abakaliki Road, Enuguโ€“PH Expressway, Agbani Road/Awkunanaw Zik Avenue, Uwani, Ogui Road, Mbanefo Street, Edward Nnaji Street, Uduma Street in New Haven, Chief Z. C. Obi Link Road, Nza Street, NTA Road in Independence Layout, Mkpแปkiti Road, Odoeze Street, Presidential Road and Okpara Square in Independence Layout.

Others include Mgbemene Street/CIC Road, Edozie Street, Kenyatta Street in Uwani, Anang Road in New Layout, as well as other designated routes within the Enugu metropolis.

ESWAMA urged residents to take note of the movement restriction and make necessary arrangements before setting out, particularly motorists whose journeys may pass through the affected routes.

The Authority also called on residents to participate actively in the sanitation exercise, stressing the importance of collective responsibility in maintaining a clean, safe and healthy environment.

Waste Disposal After Marathon

ESWAMA further directed residents to note that waste disposal at designated collection points will not commence until 1:00 p.m.

The Authority explained that the timing was necessary to accommodate the conclusion of the Enugu International Marathon, which coincides with the monthly sanitation exercise.

Residents were consequently advised to keep their waste safely until the designated disposal period.
