Dr. Peter Mbah, continues to lead from the front as he declares open the second Enugu City International Marathon, an event that is fast becoming more than a contest of athletic endurance. It is emerging as a strategic instrument of development, identity, tourism and global visibility for Enugu State.
The significance of the marathon extends far beyond medals, competition and spectacle. It provides Enugu with a powerful platform to showcase its people, infrastructure, culture and aspirations to Nigeria and the world. It attracts athletes and visitors, stimulates the tourism and hospitality sectors, creates opportunities for businesses and sponsors, and projects Enugu as a vibrant, secure and investment-friendly destination.
There is enduring wisdom in the words of Nelson Mandela: “Sport has the power to change the world.” In Enugu, that power is increasingly being translated into a deliberate strategy of connecting sports with tourism, enterprise, youth development and the international projection of the state.
The marathon also rekindles the passion of sports enthusiasts and inspires a new generation of athletes. It demonstrates that sporting events, when thoughtfully conceived and professionally organised, can become economic platforms that bring together athletes, businesses, communities, visitors and government in a shared ecosystem of opportunity.
Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah has consistently broken new ground and ventured along roads less travelled through disruptive innovations and visionary leadership. From infrastructure and security to technology, education, healthcare, investment promotion, tourism and sports development, his administration continues to demonstrate that governance can be innovative, purposeful and transformational.
As Aristotle observed, “We are what we repeatedly do.” The emerging culture of innovation, enterprise and public engagement in Enugu therefore matters not merely because of individual projects, but because of the broader development philosophy that these initiatives collectively represent.
The New Enugu is increasingly becoming a state where infrastructure provides the foundation, security creates confidence, technology opens new possibilities, and major events such as the Enugu City International Marathon give the state a visible presence on the national and international stage.
In the language of sport, development is also a race. The objective is not simply to participate, but to move ahead, set new standards and remain competitive.
Enugu’s growing investment in sports and tourism suggests an administration determined to position the state among destinations that command attention, attract investment and create opportunities for its people.
The growing enthusiasm surrounding the marathon is therefore significant. It reflects not only the excitement of sport but also the emergence of a new civic confidence — a people beginning to see their state not merely as a place to live, but as a destination capable of hosting, competing, attracting and leading.
Indeed, Enugu is living the future today.
And perhaps the most important lesson of the marathon is this: a state that knows where it is going must be willing to run towards its future.
