The All Progressives Congress (APC) grassroots campaign in Awgu Local Government Area of Enugu State gathered momentum on Wednesday, September 16, as the party’s campaign train visited Ezinese and Ezineri Mgbidi Autonomous Communities, where community and political stakeholders expressed support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, Awgu Council Chairman Hon. Uchenna Joseph Okolo and other APC candidates.

The campaign tour, led by the Executive Chairman of Awgu Local Government Area, Hon. Uchenna Joseph Okolo, formed part of the party’s ongoing grassroots engagements across the council area ahead of the September 26, 2026, local government elections.

The exercise attracted community leaders, women, youths, political stakeholders, traditional representatives and APC supporters, providing an opportunity for residents to engage directly with the campaign team, express their political preferences and present development priorities affecting their communities.

The campaign train commenced its tour at Ezinese Mgbidi Autonomous Community, where Chairman Okolo and his delegation received a warm welcome from community leaders, women, youths and political supporters.

The programme opened with a prayer led by Ohajuobodo Umeh, followed by goodwill messages and addresses from community and political stakeholders.

Speakers at the gathering expressed support for the APC administration and commended what they described as its people-oriented approach to governance. They also declared their solidarity with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Enugu State Governor Dr Peter Ndubuisi Mbah and Chairman Okolo.

Beyond their expressions of support, community representatives used the engagement to highlight pressing development needs and appeal for government attention to key infrastructure and social priorities.

Among the requests raised were improved access roads, the construction of a civic centre and town hall, employment opportunities for qualified residents, and sustained engagement between the government and the community.

Those who spoke at the gathering included the President-General of Ezinese Autonomous Community, Hon. Uchenna Chukwuedo; Councillor representing Mgbidi-Mmaku Ward, Chief Mrs Nnenna Umeh; Hon. Prince Emeka Uzochukwu; High Chief Barrister Ray Enekwachi; High Chief Princess Charles Uzochukwu; Hon. Chief Okey Ude; Hon. Kenechukwu Okolo; and Hon. Charles Ezenta.

From Ezinese, the campaign delegation proceeded to Ezineri Mgbidi Autonomous Community, where traditional leaders, community representatives, political stakeholders, women and youths gathered to receive the team.

The engagement featured contributions from the President-General of Ezineri Mgbidi, Hon. Onnwuegbuchunam Marcellus; APC Deputy Chairman in Awgu LGA, Hon. Mrs Ifeji; Chief Mrs Nnenna Umeh; and Hon. Juliet, Special Assistant to the National APC Chairman.

Also among those who addressed the gathering were the former Deputy Chairman of the Awgu LGA Caretaker Committee, Hon. Dr Tom Onyeagwa; Hon. Maximus Oha; Director-General of the Awgu Local Government Area Chairmanship Campaign Committee, Hon. Chief Okey Nathan Ude; and Hon. Anthony Nwankwo, Member representing Awgu South State Constituency.

Speakers commended Chairman Okolo’s administration for what they described as its efforts towards grassroots development, while calling for sustained government attention to the needs and aspirations of the community.

They also emphasised the importance of continued engagement between elected representatives, government officials and residents in identifying local priorities and addressing development concerns.

Responding to the various messages and requests, Chairman Uchenna Joseph Okolo thanked the people of Ezinese and Ezineri Mgbidi for their warm reception and active participation in the campaign engagements.

He called for continued cooperation between the communities and government, stressing that sustained grassroots consultations were important to understanding residents’ concerns and promoting inclusive development across Awgu.

The chairman also appealed to residents to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah ahead of the 2027 general elections, while seeking the electorate’s mandate for the September 26 local government election.

Okolo said his administration would continue to engage communities and listen to their concerns as part of efforts to promote development and improve the wellbeing of residents across the council area.

During the engagements, the chairman also highlighted proposed development interventions that could benefit the area, including the Enugu State Government’s proposed farm estate and the proposed 1.7-kilometre Mgbidi Road linking the community to the Smart School.

He said the proposed projects could improve connectivity, expand access to opportunities and contribute to the broader development of the area.

Okolo urged residents to remain united and continue supporting initiatives aimed at improving infrastructure and the overall wellbeing of communities across Awgu.

The visits to Ezinese and Ezineri Mgbidi form part of the APC’s wider grassroots mobilisation campaign across Awgu ahead of the September 26 council elections.

In recent weeks, the campaign train has visited several communities within the local government area, with engagements providing platforms for political mobilisation and discussions on community development priorities.

The latest visits also offered community leaders and residents an opportunity to present local concerns directly to political candidates and government representatives, reinforcing the role of grassroots consultations in shaping discussions around development.

With the September 26 election approaching, campaign activities are expected to continue across Awgu as political parties and candidates intensify their engagements with communities and seek support from the electorate.

The campaign’s political engagements also extend to the 2027 general elections. According to INEC’s published timetable, the presidential and National Assembly elections are scheduled for January 16, 2027, while the governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections are scheduled for February 6, 2027.
