Engr. Ogbuekwe Commends SEDC Agriculture Project, Says Initiative Holds Promise for Nkanu East

Mike Ogbuekwe, has commended the South East Development Commission (SEDC) for the flag-off of its agriculture and agro-mechanisation project in Nomeh Unateze, describing the initiative as a significant step toward expanding agricultural productivity and creating opportunities for rural communities.

Ogbuekwe, who served as Special Adviser on Agriculture to the Enugu State Governor, Dr. Peter Mbah, spoke while attending the flag-off ceremony, noting that the project was particularly significant to him because Nomeh Unateze is one of the communities that make up Nkanu East, the local government he aspires to serve.

According to him, the initiative has a personal connection to the agricultural development vision of the administration of Governor Peter Mbah, recalling that he was privileged to participate in discussions surrounding the conceptualisation of the Farm Estate model of agriculture during his time as Special Adviser.

Ogbuekwe said Governor Mbah subsequently encouraged the SEDC to adopt and implement the model in Enugu State, while providing the necessary support and partnership as the commission commenced operations.

The Nomeh Unateze project is the first of 15 flagship agro-mechanisation projects planned across the South East. It is designed to support large-scale agricultural production, including crops such as cassava and maize, while incorporating high-value crops, productivity centres and learning hubs.

Ogbuekwe noted that beyond agricultural production, the project has the potential to contribute to youth empowerment, food security, job creation, rural development and improved economic opportunities for communities across the region.

The APC candidate attended the event alongside members and supporters of the Ije Awele Movement, who were present to identify with and support the development initiative in Nkanu East.

Expressing gratitude for witnessing the project’s commencement in Nomeh Unateze, Ogbuekwe said he looked forward to seeing initiatives of such magnitude translate into tangible opportunities and improved livelihoods for the people of Nkanu East.

He reaffirmed his interest in supporting development programmes that strengthen agriculture, empower young people and expand economic opportunities at the grassroots.

“For me, this was more than just attending another event. It was encouraging to witness an initiative of this scale being launched here in Nkanu East and to see our communities positioned to benefit from regional agricultural development,” Ogbuekwe said.

The project is expected to form part of broader efforts by the SEDC to promote agricultural mechanisation, increase food production and stimulate sustainable economic development across the South East.
