The member representing Aninri/Awgu/Oji River Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Engr. Anayo Onwuegbu, has drawn the attention of the Federal Government to the devastating flooding that recently ravaged several communities in Aninri Local Government Area of Enugu State.

Onwuegbu raised the issue on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, during plenary, through a Motion on a Matter of Urgent National Importance, highlighting the severe humanitarian and economic impact of the disaster on residents of Mpu, Okpanku, Ukey, Oduma and Ndeabor communities.

According to the lawmaker, the affected communities experienced unprecedented flooding following approximately 15 hours of torrential rainfall on the night of September 21–22, 2026.
He told the House that the flood occurred unexpectedly in the middle of the night, leaving residents with little opportunity to protect their homes and belongings. Several residential buildings and public infrastructure were reportedly damaged, while numerous families were displaced.
The flooding also destroyed market stalls and shops, food supplies, rice mills, poultry and piggery farms, farmlands and crops, resulting in significant losses to businesses, agricultural activities and household livelihoods.
Expressing concern over the humanitarian situation, Onwuegbu urged the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to urgently intervene by providing relief materials to the affected communities.
He specifically called for the provision of food items, household and building materials, clothing, bedding, sanitation supplies and medical assistance, including essential drugs for both adults and children.
The motion was unanimously adopted by the House of Representatives.
Following the adoption, the House directed NEMA to take immediate steps to provide relief materials and other necessary assistance to the affected communities.
The House also called on the Ministry of Water Resources to make the necessary budgetary provisions for the completion of the Ivo Dam, which is expected to contribute to mitigating the recurrence and impact of flooding in the affected areas.
The development highlights the urgent need for coordinated intervention to support displaced families, restore damaged livelihoods and infrastructure, and strengthen long-term measures to address recurring flooding in Aninri and neighbouring communities.
