…Federal lawmaker honours late Dinah Uchendu, joins family, political leaders and community to mark final passage
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe! There are moments when public office loses its ceremony and leadership is reduced to something much simpler: being there.

On Saturday, in the quiet grief of Umuchime Amagu Village, Akpugoeze, Hon. Engr. Anayo Onwuegbu, FNSE, stood with the Uchendu family as they laid to rest Mrs. Dinah Nebechukwu Uchendu (nee Ekeh), the 72-year-old matriarch fondly known as Oji Okeosisi.

The Member representing Aninri/Awgu/Oji-River Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives had come not merely as a federal lawmaker, but as a colleague, principal and friend to Hon. Boniface Uchendu, former Chairman of Oji-River Local Government Area and his Senior Legislative Aide on Special Duties.

At the deceased’s husband’s compound, where grief and remembrance shared the same space, Onwuegbu joined the Uchendu family, relatives, friends, political associates and community leaders in the final rites for a woman whose earthly journey had come to its close.

It was a solemn gathering. The kind in which conversation naturally becomes subdued, greetings acquire a deeper meaning, and the presence of familiar faces becomes itself a form of consolation.

For Hon. Onwuegbu, the journey to Akpugoeze was therefore more than an official obligation. It was an expression of solidarity with a member of his team at one of life’s most difficult thresholds—the burial of a mother.

His presence also reflected the relationship that has developed between the federal lawmaker and Hon. Uchendu, who, after serving as Chairman of Oji-River Local Government Area, now serves as Senior Legislative Aide on Special Duties to the representative of Aninri/Awgu/Oji-River Federal Constituency.
Onwuegbu did not come alone.

He was accompanied by members of his political and community team, including,Former Commissioner for Science and Technology, Hon. Chief Obi Carl Kama, Hon. Don Meche Akabueze, Hon. Emeka Umerah, Hon. Ifeanyichukwu Chukwu, Barr. Peter Ajah, Hon. Splendor Ihudiebube, Hon. Sunday Onwuegbu, Hon. Emeka Anukwelu, Hon. Bonaventure Okolie, Hon. Okibe Michael, Hon. Chiedozie Nchekwube, Hon. Flag Onwuegbu, Hon. Onyii Nwafor, Hon. Favour Ofoma, Hon. Miriam Nnaji, Hon. Obinna A. Okpara, Media Aide to Hon. Onwuegbu, Mr. Sunny Nwajagu, Hon. Ifeanyi Onwubiko and members of the Omeiheukwu Ladies, among others.

Their arrival added to a gathering that drew an array of political and community figures, former public office holders and associates who came to honour the deceased and, more importantly, to lend their shoulders to a grieving family.

Among those present were Senator Osita Ngwu, representing Enugu West Senatorial District; Executive Chairman of Oji-River Local Government Area, Hon. Greg Anyaegbudike, Chief Benson Eze, Onwa and pioneer Chairman of the APC in Oji-River; Hon. Chukwu Phillip Sunday; Hon. Engr. Magnus Edeh, Member representing Aninri State Constituency in the Enugu State House of Assembly; Rt. Hon. Obidimma Johnny, former Majority Leader of the Enugu State House of Assembly; Engr. Ezenwa Chukwudi, Former Chairman of Awgu LGA, Hon. Stanley Okeke, former Deputy Chairman of Oji-River Local Government; Chief Cletus Akalusi (Kwashi Dodo), former Secretary of the APC in Enugu State; Hon. Nonyelum Festus C.; Hon. Manfred Nzekwe, former Mayor of Oji-River and former Commissioner for Youths and Sports; Chief Mrs. Amaka Anajemba; Hon. Barr. Ernest Nwaeze; Hon. Ejike Tasie Ilo; Hon. Dame Ugochi Madueke; Nze Chimobi David; Hon. Ifeanyi Chibueze; Hon. Osita Eze; Hon. Eric Olaedo, former Mayor of Udi; Hon. Paul Udebuluzor, APC Chairman, Oji-River Local Government; Chief Geoffrey Onwuegbu, Onowu Akpugoeze Ugwu, among others.

In his message of condolence, Hon. Onwuegbu expressed his heartfelt sympathy to Hon. Boniface Uchendu and the entire Uchendu family, acknowledging the pain that accompanies the departure of a mother and family matriarch.

He urged the family to find strength in the memories she left behind and in the values by which she was remembered, while praying that God would grant them the fortitude to bear the loss.
He also prayed for the peaceful repose of the deceased, joining the family and Christian faithful in the solemn prayer:
“Eternal rest grant unto her, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon her. May her soul, and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.”
And then came the finality that every funeral carries the last prayers, the final rites and the painful acceptance that the woman being mourned would no longer return to the doorway, the family table or the familiar rhythm of home.

Mrs. Dinah Uchendu had completed her journey.
For the Uchendu family, Akpugoeze became a place of farewell. For Hon. Onwuegbu, it was a place of duty, compassion and human solidarity.

He came to stand with his aide.
He came to honour his mother.

And, in the language of grief that needs no interpreter, he came simply to say: you will not mourn alone.
