The newly established association seeks to bring owners and practitioners of online publications under a common professional platform to address shared challenges, promote responsible journalism and strengthen engagement with government institutions, security agencies and other stakeholders.

In a communiqué announcing its formation, OMP said the growing influence of online publications in shaping public opinion, informing citizens and holding public officeholders accountable had made it increasingly important for practitioners to organise themselves and advance their common interests.

The association said it would begin its activities in the South-East, while pursuing a broader ambition to develop into a national body representing online media professionals across the country.

Its emergence comes amid the expanding role of digital platforms in Nigeria’s media landscape, where online publications have become important channels for breaking news, public debate and scrutiny of government policies and actions.

OMP intends to provide members with opportunities for professional development, collaboration and collective engagement on issues affecting their work, welfare and the future of online journalism.

The association also plans to establish relationships with government officials, security agencies, educational institutions, corporate organisations and other relevant bodies to encourage dialogue and cooperation between online media practitioners and institutions whose activities affect the profession.

Beyond professional representation, OMP said it would promote accountability, professionalism and responsible media practice, stressing the importance of public trust in online publications.

The association noted that its long-term success would depend on active membership participation, a clear sense of purpose and programmes that respond to the needs of practitioners.

Membership is open to individuals who own or work with online media publication platforms and are willing to contribute to the association’s objectives.

OMP has called on online media practitioners across the South-East and other parts of Nigeria to join the initiative and support efforts to build a unified professional body capable of articulating their interests and contributing to the development of the media industry.

The communiqué was signed by Jude Chinedu and Chukwumerije Aja on behalf of the OMP Communiqué Drafting Committee.

As the association begins its activities, its ability to translate its stated objectives into effective representation, practical programmes and measurable benefits for members will be central to establishing its credibility and securing its place in Nigeria’s evolving media landscape.
