The Enugu State Government has intensified efforts to address the persistent incidence of road accidents along the Ugwu Onyeama axis of the Enugu–Onitsha Expressway through strengthened collaboration with the Police, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and other relevant agencies.

The Commissioner for Transport, Mr. Richard Agu, Esq., disclosed this during a meeting with the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Central Police Station, Uwani, CSP Sani Abraham Moriti, where both parties deliberated on coordinated strategies to enhance road safety and minimise accidents along the notorious highway.

During the meeting, the DPO announced the constitution of a five-man committee to collaborate with the Ministry of Transport in developing and implementing appropriate interventions to address the safety challenges along the axis.

Agu disclosed that he had also engaged the FRSC Sector Commander on the matter, emphasising that the Police and the FRSC would discharge their respective statutory responsibilities on the federal highway, while the ministry would provide the necessary technical and operational support to facilitate effective implementation of the safety measures.

He appealed to motorists to exercise caution while driving, particularly by avoiding excessive speeding, reckless overtaking and other dangerous driving practices capable of endangering lives and property.

In a related development, the ministry’s rescue team, in collaboration with the Enugu State Traffic Management Authority (ESTMA), undertook a recovery operation following a multiple-vehicle accident involving six vehicles at Proda Junction, Ugwu Onyeama, on Saturday, October 31, 2026. The incident reportedly resulted in fatalities.

The rescue team worked until 9 p.m. on Saturday and returned to the scene on Sunday to evacuate the remaining vehicles and facilitate the restoration of free-flowing traffic along the expressway.

Meanwhile, the General Manager of the Enugu State Transport Company (ENTRACO), Mr. Bob Itanyi, has pledged the agency’s support and collaboration with the Ministry of Transport in advancing the state’s transportation sector.

Reaffirming the government’s commitment to public safety, Agu stated that the ministry would continue to strengthen road safety initiatives, improve traffic management and deepen inter-agency collaboration to safeguard lives and property across Enugu State.
