Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe! The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Enugu State Command, and the Enugu State Ministry of Transport have renewed their commitment to strengthening inter-agency collaboration towards curbing road traffic crashes and improving road safety across the state.
The renewed commitment was reaffirmed during a familiarisation visit by the FRSC Sector Commander, CC P. O. Egwu, to the Honourable Commissioner for Transport, Hon. Barr. Richard Agu, where both parties deliberated on strategic interventions to enhance traffic management, road safety enforcement and stakeholder engagement.
A major highlight of the meeting was a proposal for the establishment of a joint emergency response station at Ugwu Onyeama, a notorious accident-prone corridor that has continued to record alarming fatalities. The proposed facility is expected to facilitate prompt emergency response, strengthen surveillance and monitoring, and support the deployment of appropriate road signs and other critical safety infrastructure.
Speaking during the engagement, the FRSC Sector Commander disclosed that Ugwu Onyeama recorded approximately 893 accident-related deaths between 2023 and 2026, describing the statistics as alarming and underscoring the urgent need for coordinated, sustained and decisive action by relevant stakeholders.
In his remarks, the Commissioner for Transport, Hon. Barr. Richard Agu, reiterated the state government’s commitment to strengthening institutional synergy among the Ministry of Transport, the Enugu State Transport Management Authority (ESTMA), Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIO), the Nigeria Police Force and the FRSC.
He emphasised that the agencies were working collaboratively as a unified team with a shared mandate to promote safer roads, ensure effective traffic regulation and safeguard lives and property across Enugu State.
The Commissioner also urged motorists, particularly residents of Enugu State, to refrain from reckless driving, driving against traffic and other traffic violations. He stressed the importance of strict compliance with traffic regulations, adherence to speed limits and heightened vigilance, especially during the Ember months, when increased vehicular movement often heightens the risk of road crashes.
Agu further underscored that road safety remains a shared responsibility, requiring sustained cooperation among government institutions, transport operators, motorists, road safety stakeholders and the general public.
The strengthened partnership between the FRSC and the Ministry of Transport is expected to bolster enforcement mechanisms, intensify public enlightenment campaigns and promote proactive safety interventions aimed at reducing road traffic crashes and fatalities across the state.
The Ministry consequently calls on all motorists to prioritise safety, obey traffic regulations and exercise responsible driving, emphasising that no journey is worth the loss of a human life.
