A stunning revelation has rocked the political landscape in Rivers State, as Tony Okocha, the embattled former Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has publicly confessed to rigging local council elections during the tenure of former Governor Rotimi Amaechi.
Okocha, who served as Chief of Staff to Amaechi from 2007 to 2015, made the shocking admission during an interview on a Channels TV programme. When questioned about his involvement in election rigging, Okocha candidly stated, “I did not hide it.” He further asserted that he should be praised as a whistleblower, rather than face consequences for his actions.
Okocha’s justification for his role in election rigging raised eyebrows, as he likened himself to an armed robber who confesses to past crimes. He argued that since he’s coming clean, the law should not retroactively apply. However, the TV host swiftly countered that election riggers belong behind bars, prompting Okocha to object.
This bombshell revelation comes on the heels of Okocha’s recent ousting as the Rivers APC Caretaker Committee chairman by a Port Harcourt High Court, presided over by Justice Sika Aprioku. The court’s decision and Okocha’s subsequent admission have sparked widespread controversy and raised questions about the integrity of the electoral process in Rivers State.
