Representative Alex Ikwechegh has apologized for physically and verbally assaulting a Bolt driver, Stephen Abuwatseya, in Abuja on October 27. The incident sparked widespread outrage after viral videos showed Ikwechegh threatening and slapping Abuwatseya.

In his apology statement, Ikwechegh assured the public that he is cooperating with the Nigerian Police investigation and supports their efforts to ensure justice is served. He also appreciated the swift condemnation of his actions by his party and the Nigerian Police.
According to reports, Abuwatseya officially reported the incident to the Maitama divisional headquarters. The Nigerian Police Force is investigating the matter, with spokesperson Olumuyiwa Adejobi confirming the probe.
Bolt, the ride-hailing platform, expressed sadness and concern, stating they are investigating and taking steps to assist Abuwatseya. The company’s swift response followed widespread calls for Ikwechegh’s suspension from the House of Representatives, with many Nigerians citing his “dishonorable conduct”.
To prevent similar incidents, Ikwechegh pledged to seek professional counseling to address underlying issues and engage in community service initiatives promoting respect, empathy, and understanding. “I urge all Nigerians to join me in promoting a culture of respect, tolerance, and understanding,” he said.
