Igwe Samuel Asadu, Chairman of the Enugu State Council of Traditional Rulers, has expressed shock and sadness over the tragic fuel tanker explosion that occurred on Saturday, January 25, 2025, at the Ugwu-Onyeama axis of the Enugu-Onitsha expressway.

The incident, which claimed multiple lives and caused injuries, happened when a fuel-laden tanker experienced brake failure, fell, and exploded, leaving 11 vehicles burned to ashes.

In a statement released in Enugu on Tuesday, Igwe Asadu extended his heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and wished the injured a speedy recovery. He also commended Governor Peter Mbah for his prompt response to the accident scene and for directing full medical attention to the victims.

“I’m deeply shocked and concerned by the tragic incident at the Ugwu-Onyeama axis of the Enugu-Onitsha expressway. It’s been one death too many,” Igwe Asadu said. “I extend my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families as well as the government and the good people of Enugu State. I also wish the injured speedy recovery.”

Igwe Asadu also joined the call for the enforcement of anti-spill locks on fuel-laden tankers. He appealed to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the state Ministry of Transport to invoke the law that prohibits tankers conveying premium spirit and other inflammable products without anti-spill locks from plying on the roads.

“Members of the FRSC and other relevant authorities in the country should invoke the law that prohibits tankers conveying premium spirit and other inflammable products without anti-spill locks from plying on the roads,” Igwe Asadu said. “The anti-spill lock is very necessary, it would ensure that when these trucks fell, they do not spill their contents.”

The call for enforcement of anti-spill locks on fuel-laden tankers has been a recurring theme in the aftermath of the tanker explosion, with many stakeholders advocating for stricter safety measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
