Enugu Health Commissioner Embarks on Facility Tour, Pledges Reforms for Improved Service Delivery

As part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the state’s healthcare system, the Enugu State Commissioner for Health, Prof. George Ugwu, on Monday undertook a familiarisation visit to the General Hospital, Nsukka, where he pledged enhanced service delivery and better working conditions for healthcare workers.

The visit, which aimed to assess the facility’s operational challenges and explore avenues for reform, saw the Commissioner engage directly with the hospital’s Chief Medical Officer, medical personnel, and administrative staff. Issues raised during the interactive session included inadequate staffing, theft of medical equipment, and the urgent need for improved lighting and security infrastructure within the hospital premises.

Following a tour of the facility, Prof. Ugwu reiterated the state government’s commitment to building a resilient and patient-focused health system. “I have seen some encouraging practices here, but there is still room for significant improvement, especially in service delivery,” he said. “We are committed to working closely with the Enugu State Hospital Management Board to enhance conditions for both patients and staff.”

He further emphasized that the visit is one in a series of assessments designed to ensure that health facilities across Enugu operate at optimal standards. “Our goal,” he stated, “is to make quality healthcare accessible, efficient, and sustainable throughout the state.”

In his remarks, the Chief Medical Officer of General Hospital Nsukka, Dr. Boniface Okolo, expressed appreciation for the visit, noting that the presence of high-level leadership boosts morale and reaffirms support for frontline healthcare workers. “This visit is a strong message to all of us that our efforts are recognised, and that help is on the way,” Dr. Okolo said.

Prof. Ugwu was accompanied by the Chief Executive Officer of the State Hospital Management Board, Prof. Uche Agu; Director of Medical Services, Dr. Chinyere Ezeudu; and other senior directors from the Enugu State Ministry of Health.
