Awgu Local Government Area witnessed a remarkable political moment on Tuesday as the All Progressives Congress (APC) successfully conducted a peaceful and massively attended Chairmanship Primary Election, culminating in the emergence of Hon. Uchenna Joseph Okolo (Hon. Uche Okolo) as the party’s Chairmanship Flag Bearer for the forthcoming September 2026 Local Government Elections in Enugu State.

The exercise, held across the eleven political wards in the council area, attracted an overwhelming turnout of party faithful, stakeholders, youths, women groups, and community leaders who participated actively in what has widely been described as a model democratic process.
From the early hours of accreditation to the final announcement of results, the primary election was conducted in a peaceful, transparent, and orderly atmosphere under the supervision of members of the APC Primary Election Committee and party officials.
Observers and stakeholders commended the maturity, discipline, and unity displayed throughout the exercise, describing it as one of the most credible and well-organized political outings witnessed in Awgu in recent times.
At the conclusion of the collation process, the Executive Chairman of Awgu Local Government Area, Hon. Uche Okolo, was officially declared winner of the APC Chairmanship Primary Election after securing a sweeping mandate from party members across the eleven wards.
As the sole aspirant in the contest, Hon. Okolo polled an impressive 17,226 valid votes out of 17,230 total participants, reaffirming his overwhelming popularity and acceptance within the APC structure in Awgu.
Declaring the result, the Collation Officer, Hon. Toby Odinwamkpa, praised party members for their peaceful conduct and commitment to the democratic process, noting that the exercise reflected the growing strength, cohesion, and political stability of the APC in the local government area.
The declaration ceremony, which took place at the APC Headquarters in Awgu Local Government Area, witnessed the presence of prominent political figures and key stakeholders from across the council area.
Among those in attendance were the Returned Deputy Chairman of Awgu Local Government Area, Hon. Dr. Stanley Ezediuto; the Enugu State Commissioner for Human Development and Poverty Eradication, Prof. Benedett Ekwutosi Okoli; the Secretary to the Local Government; the Chairman of APC in Awgu LGA, Hon. Kenechukwu Okolo; Hon. Nelson Uduji; Hon. Chinedu Chukwunweike; Hon. CNN;Hon. Toochukwu Chukwu, Hon. Joe Ani; alongside several other party leaders, stakeholders, and supporters who gathered to witness the historic declaration and reaffirm their support for the party’s leadership in Awgu.
The primary election also witnessed massive grassroots mobilization across the wards, with stakeholders describing the turnout as a strong vote of confidence in the leadership style and developmental strides of Hon. Okolo’s administration.
Speaking shortly after his declaration, Hon. Uche Okolo expressed heartfelt appreciation to party leaders, stakeholders, and supporters for the overwhelming support shown to him throughout the process.
He described his emergence as a victory for the entire people of Awgu and reaffirmed his commitment to sustaining people-oriented governance, infrastructural development, and inclusive leadership across the local government area.
Hon. Okolo further commended the Governor of Enugu State, Barr. Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, for what he described as visionary and transformational leadership, praising the governor’s ongoing infrastructural revolution and governance reforms across the state.
Political observers have continued to applaud the successful conduct of the primary election, describing it as a major boost for the APC ahead of the forthcoming local government elections.
