International Day of Parliamentarism: Prof Nnamchi Preaches Service Above Politics

Today, June 30, we join the global community to mark the International Day of Parliamentarism, a day set aside to celebrate the role of parliaments in deepening democracy, protecting rights, and delivering development to the people.

For me, parliamentarism is not about titles, chambers, or debates for their own sake. It is about one simple idea: The People First โ€“ Letโ€™s Do It Better.

โ€œSince assuming office to represent Enugu East/Isi-Uzo, that idea has guided every bill, motion, and constituency intervention, I have sponsored or pursued for the benefit my constituency and the nation at large.

โ€œFrom replacing classrooms under trees with modern blocks, to restoring sight through free medical outreaches, to lighting up streets and pathways with solar power, to equipping our youths with digital skills for the new economy โ€” every action is rooted in the belief that government must work for the ordinary citizen.

โ€œWhile political noise and permutations fill the air, the work of representation must remain steady. Court cases may delay, seasons may change, but the mandate given by the people is a covenant to serve.

โ€œThat covenant is measured not by propaganda, but by impact: a child learning in a safer class, a trader doing business after dark, a young graduate getting a job, a community with a safer environment.

โ€œOn this day, I salute my colleagues in the National Assembly, state assemblies, and parliaments across the world who choose service over spectacle. I also salute the constituents of Enugu East/Isi-Uzo whose trust keeps me focused on delivery.

โ€œThe lesson of parliamentarism is clear: when leaders invest in their people, the people become the strongest defenders of democracy. As we approach 2027, let us choose performance over propaganda, substance over slogans, and service over self.

โ€œTogether, we will continue to build a constituency and a nation where the dividends of democracy are real, visible, and felt in every home.โ€
