The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Enugu State Branch, has applauded the Enugu State Government for its sustained investment in agriculture and food security, describing the initiative as a critical step toward improving public health and the overall wellbeing of residents.
The commendation followed the official flag-off of the 2026 Agricultural Inputs Distribution Programme for registered farmers across the 260 political wards of the state, performed by Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah.
In a statement signed by the Chairman of NMA Enugu State, Rtn. Dr. Sunday Okafor, the Association described its participation in the event as a privilege and noted that the programme, now in its third consecutive year, reflects the government’s unwavering commitment to strengthening food production, enhancing food security, and addressing insecurity through agriculture.
According to the Association, food security remains one of the most important determinants of public health, stressing that access to safe, nutritious, and affordable food is fundamental to preventing malnutrition, reducing disease burden, strengthening immunity, improving maternal and child health, and promoting healthier communities.
The NMA emphasized that health security and food security are inseparable, noting that sustainable investments in agriculture produce significant health benefits beyond increased food production. These include poverty reduction, improved household nutrition, enhanced mental wellbeing, stronger community resilience, and the reduction of social conditions that often contribute to insecurity and poor health outcomes.
The medical body therefore commended the administration of Governor Mbah for implementing policies and programmes that empower farmers and boost agricultural productivity across the grassroots.
It also urged beneficiaries of the agricultural inputs distribution programme to make effective and responsible use of the resources provided in order to maximize food production and contribute to the state’s drive toward food sufficiency and economic prosperity.
Furthermore, the Association called on community leaders, development partners, agricultural extension workers, healthcare professionals, and private sector stakeholders to strengthen collaboration in promoting the vital connection between agriculture, nutrition, and public health.
According to the NMA, addressing the social determinants of health requires coordinated, multisectoral action, with agriculture serving as one of the strongest foundations for building healthier and more resilient communities.
Reaffirming its commitment to the people of Enugu State, the Association pledged to continue partnering with the government and relevant stakeholders in advancing evidence-based policies and programmes aimed at improving health outcomes and sustainable development.
The statement concluded with a call for collective action, expressing confidence that through sustained collaboration, Enugu State can achieve a healthier population, stronger food security, and greater economic prosperity.
