It was a celebration of love, compassion and community spirit in Ugwuoba as the Member representing Aninri/Awgu/Oji River Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Engr. Anayo Onwuegbu, FNSE, extended a helping hand to orphans during the annual August meeting of the Women Wing of the Ugwuoba Development Union (UDU).

Held at the Ugwuoba Civic Centre, the colourful gathering brought together women from the 17 villages of Ugwuoba under the chairmanship of Chief Engr. Darlington Onwuka (Okunenyeife), with a powerful theme: “Be the Hope of a Widow and Orphans.”
The theme came alive through practical acts of kindness, particularly the thoughtful intervention by Hon. Onwuegbu, who presented school bags and dozens of exercise books to the orphans, providing them with essential materials to support their education.
The gesture was widely appreciated as a meaningful investment in the future of the children, demonstrating that genuine leadership is not only about policies and projects, but also about remembering and supporting those who need a helping hand.
Speaking at the event, Onwuegbu commended the women of Ugwuoba for their unity, resilience and commitment to community development. He praised them for deliberately placing the welfare of widows and orphans at the heart of their annual gathering.
The federal lawmaker was represented by his Senior Legislative Assistant on Constituency Matters, Sir Ephraim Offiah, alongside Hon. Chukwuemeka Anukwelu, Chief Hon. Chiedozie Nchekwube and Hon. Eugene Nnatuanya.
In her address, the Chairlady of the UDU Women Wing, Mrs. Grace Nwanah, welcomed guests and reaffirmed the commitment of the women to building a more caring community where widows, orphans and other vulnerable persons are not forgotten.
The event attracted an impressive gathering of political leaders, government officials, traditional rulers and community stakeholders, including the Senator representing Enugu West Senatorial Zone, Engr. Osita Ngwu, represented by Hon. Pedro Ibeh; Nwa Ada Chioma Ononyaba, SSA on Religious Matters and Welfare; Chairman of Oji River LGA, Hon. Greg Anyaegbudike; Member representing Oji River State Constituency, Hon. Osita Eze; Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Dame Barr. Ugochi Madueke; APC Enugu West Zonal Chairman, Hon. Chimaobi Nze; and Vice Chairman of Oji River LGA, Hon. Barr. Seth Nwokolo.
The traditional institution and leadership of Ugwuoba Development Union were also well represented. Igwe Cyril Anayo Anochili, Ogbuagu 1 of Umuogbuagu, was represented by his Palace Secretary, Chief Uzo Enem, while former UDU Presidents-General, Chief Clement Onuh, Onowu, and High Chief Joe Uba, also graced the occasion.
The National Chairman of the Ugwuoba Development Union, Prince Alexander Nwokeabia, welcomed guests and expressed appreciation for their presence, wishing them safe journeys back to their respective destinations.
Beyond the colourful celebrations, the gathering demonstrated the power of community, compassion and purposeful leadership. The decision to place widows and orphans at the centre of the celebration, coupled with Hon. Onwuegbu’s educational support, gave the occasion a deeper meaning.
For the children who received the school materials, it was more than a gift, it was a reminder that they are seen, valued and supported, and that their dreams are worth nurturing.
Indeed, the Ugwuoba women’s August meeting was not merely a ceremony; it was a beautiful expression of humanity, unity and the enduring spirit of giving back to the community.
