The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Enugu State, has named Enugu-born Nigerian-American businessman, academic and writer, Dr. SKC Ogbonnia, as the leader of the party in Enugu State.
Dr. Ogbonnia, who is the Chairman of First Texas Energy Corporation, a Houston-based petroleum and energy company, was announced as the leader of the party following an expanded state executive meeting held in Enugu on Saturday.
In a statement signed by the Secretary of the party, Dr. Sebastine Chukwuebuka Okafor and made available to newsmen, he said the decision was taken in recognition of Dr. Ogbonnia’s commitment to the growth and progress of the party, as well as his support for the electoral victory of the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi.
Okafor said the decision followed extensive deliberations by members of the expanded executive, adding that the party considered Dr. Ogbonnia’s experience, capacity and commitment to democratic development.
The Secretary explained that the new leadership arrangement is expected to strengthen coordination among party members and provide effective direction as the party prepares for forthcoming political activities.
According to him, “The party is focused on building a united structure that will work collectively towards electoral victory, which is why it was created in the first instance. With someone like Dr. SKC Ogbonnia, who has demonstrated a strong commitment to the growth and stability of the NDC in Enugu State, victory is assured come 2027.
“This is because his background in business, academia and public affairs will bring valuable experience to the party’s leadership, and we believe that his experience and exposure will contribute meaningfully to the development of the NDC in Enugu State.”
Okafor further called on all members and supporters of the party to support the new leadership and remain committed to the objectives of the NDC.
“This is a time for unity, discipline and collective responsibility among members of the party. The party remains committed to presenting a credible political alternative to the people of Enugu State and Nigeria. Our objective is clear: to build a strong political platform capable of delivering the change Nigerians are demanding.”
Addressing newsmen, the State Chairman of the party, Dr. Johnpaul Anih, congratulated Dr. Ogbonnia on his emergence as the leader of the party, stressing that he possesses the experience and capacity required to lead the party to success.
Dr. Anih commended the sterling leadership of the National Leader, Senator Seriake Dickson, and the National Chairman, Senator Cleopas Moses Zuwoghe, for their efforts towards uniting the party across the country, particularly in Enugu State.
He also assured party members that his leadership would continue to mobilise support and strengthen the party’s structures across the state.
Dr. Anih called on other party leaders to join the state structure in Oji River on Wednesday, as the party prepares to officially kick off its campaign for the forthcoming local government elections
