Police Order Probe Into Alleged Disruption of Political Gatherings in Enugu

The Enugu State Police Command has ordered a full-scale investigation into two separate incidents of alleged disruption of political gatherings in Nkanu West Local Government Area, warning political actors and their supporters against violence ahead of the electoral process.

The Commissioner of Police, Enugu State Command, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, psc, mspsp, smicm, gave the directive following reports of disturbances at two political gatherings in Nkanu West on Saturday, September 12, 2026.

According to a statement issued on Sunday by the Command’s Police Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, the first incident occurred at Ndiuno-Obuoffia community, where armed hoodlums allegedly disrupted an NDC ward meeting with sporadic gunshots, leaving two attendees injured.

The second incident was reported at St. Joseph Primary School, Agbani, where hoodlums allegedly destroyed canopies and chairs arranged for a PDP rally.

The Commissioner has directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to thoroughly investigate both incidents and ensure that anyone found culpable is brought to book.

Police operatives, the statement said, were promptly deployed to both locations after receiving reports of the disturbances. Their intervention was aimed at preventing further breaches of public peace and tracking down the fleeing suspects.

The Command, however, noted that neither of the two political gatherings had been preceded by notification to, or a request for security coverage from, the Police.

CP Giwa reiterated his earlier appeal to political parties and their supporters to conduct their activities peacefully and within the confines of the law. He warned that electoral offences remain punishable under Nigerian law and cautioned political parties, candidates, supporters and other stakeholders against violence, intimidation, destruction of property and other acts capable of undermining public peace and the electoral process.

The Commissioner also urged political parties and organisers of political activities to notify the Police in advance of campaigns, meetings, rallies and other gatherings to enable the Command to make adequate security arrangements.

He assured residents that the Enugu State Police Command would continue to work towards maintaining a peaceful and secure environment for lawful political activities, while dealing decisively with individuals found to have violated the law.

The Police Command’s warning comes at a time when political activities in the state are gathering momentum, underscoring the need for political competition to remain a contest of ideas rather than a theatre of violence.
