Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe! The Executive Chairman of Awgu Local Government Area, Hon. Uchenna Joseph Okolo, has called for renewed patriotism, national unity and collective responsibility as Nigeria marks its 66th Independence Anniversary.
Okolo, in a goodwill message to Nigerians, particularly the people of Awgu, said the anniversary offered an opportunity for citizens to reflect on the nation’s journey, honour the sacrifices of its founding generation and renew their commitment to building a peaceful, united and prosperous country.
The message, conveyed through his Special Adviser on General Media and Publicity, Hon. Tochukwu Chukwu, stressed the need for Nigerians to rise above ethnic, political and social differences and place the common good at the heart of national development.
The council chairman said Nigeria’s progress would require not only effective leadership but also responsible citizenship, mutual respect and a shared determination by citizens to contribute meaningfully to the country’s advancement.
The Awgu council boss also commended the Governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, for what he described as a strong focus on infrastructure, human capital development, economic growth and institutional reforms.
Okolo said the governor’s development agenda was contributing to the transformation of Enugu State, particularly through initiatives aimed at improving infrastructure, expanding economic opportunities and strengthening public service delivery.
He described Mbah’s leadership as an important driver of the state’s development aspirations, expressing confidence that sustained implementation of development-focused policies would further enhance opportunities for Ndi Enugu and strengthen the state’s long-term economic prospects.
According to him, the progress being recorded across the state reinforces the importance of continuity, effective governance and policies capable of delivering measurable benefits to citizens.
Reflecting on his administration’s first term and the renewed mandate secured at the September 26 local government election, Okolo expressed appreciation to traditional rulers, community leaders, stakeholders, youth groups, women, political actors and the entire people of Awgu for their support and cooperation.
He said the goodwill of the people had been instrumental to the implementation of programmes and projects across the local government area.
The chairman, who was sworn in for a second term on September 30, 2026, pledged that the renewed mandate would further strengthen his administration’s commitment to inclusive governance and people-centred development.
He assured Ndi Awgu that his administration would remain focused on projects and programmes capable of improving community welfare, supporting sustainable development and extending the dividends of democracy to residents across the local government.
Okolo said the second term had placed a greater responsibility on his administration to remain accessible, accountable and responsive to the needs of the people.
He therefore called for continued cooperation between the council, community stakeholders and citizens, stressing that sustainable development could only be achieved through collective effort.
Reiterating his Independence Day message, Okolo urged Nigerians to preserve peace, demonstrate compassion and uphold the values of responsible citizenship.
He said the strength of the country lies not only in its diversity but also in the capacity of its people to work together despite their differences.
“We are better off when we are united and when we look out for one another as our brother’s keeper,” he said.
The chairman maintained that mutual respect, shared responsibility and collective action remained critical to translating the aspirations of Nigeria’s founding fathers into tangible progress for present and future generations.
He expressed optimism that continued development efforts in Enugu State, coupled with greater patriotism and civic responsibility, would contribute to a more peaceful and prosperous future.
In a separate message to mark the beginning of October, the council chairman extended his warm greetings to the people of Awgu, wishing families across the local government good health, happiness, prosperity and abundant blessings.
He urged residents to enter the new month with renewed hope, faith and determination, while continuing to support peace, unity and community development.
Okolo reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to service and inclusive development, expressing optimism that the new month would bring fresh opportunities and further progress to Awgu.
As Nigeria commemorates 66 years of independence, the Awgu council chairman’s message combines a call for national unity with a renewed commitment to grassroots development, community partnership and responsive leadership in Awgu Local Government Area.
