
The Federal Government and Organised Labour have reached a landmark agreement to alleviate the burden of rising petrol and food prices on Nigerians. This breakthrough came after a crucial meeting held at the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), coinciding with the House of Representatives’ urgent call for the Federal Government to reverse the recent petrol price hike.

These include reducing transport fares and prices of essential commodities, particularly foodstuffs. The government has pledged to release over 2,000 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) conversion kits and 45 CNG buses to Labour, facilitating a decrease in transportation costs.
To further address the economic challenges, the government has committed to convening a discussion with state governors. This meeting aims to ensure the implementation of the new minimum wage of ₦70,000 across the country, starting in October. Additionally, the government promises to hasten the completion of almost five refineries, pay outstanding arrears and wage awards to workers and inaugurate all boards with Labour representatives.
Sources close to the meeting revealed that both parties have agreed to maintain continuous engagement and dialogue. This renewed collaboration seeks to improve their previously strained relationship. Labour leaders expressed optimism, stating that this ongoing dialogue will minimize disagreements and foster cooperation.
The agreement underscores the government’s commitment to cushioning the effects of subsidy removal on citizens. With Labour’s incorporation into the economic council, they will participate in and monitor economic policies, ensuring a more harmonious relationship between the government and Labour.
