GOVERNOR MBAH’S SMART SCHOOL INITIATIVE EARNS WORLD BANK RECOGNITION

The Enugu State Universal Basic Education Board (ENSUBEB) Chairman, Associate Professor Hyginus Banko Okibe, recently represented Enugu State at the World Bank’s interactive consultative meeting held at the World Bank Country Office in Abuja.

Enugu State was chosen alongside five other states, one from each geopolitical zone, to participate in the high-level meeting. This selection was largely due to Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah’s outstanding performance in the education sector, particularly in basic education.

According to Professor Okibe, the Governor’s Smart School initiative has been instrumental in improving education outcomes in Enugu State. This achievement was showcased during the National Council for Education meeting held from October 6-10, 2024, at the Digital Resources Center and Nigerian Airforce Conference Hall in Abuja.

The Smart School initiative aims to establish over 250 state-of-the-art schools across 260 wards in 14 months, with features including internet access, solar power, modern ICT centers, robotics and artificial intelligence centers. Teachers are also undergoing training facilitated by global experts to ensure they’re well-prepared for the innovative educational environment.

Some key features of the Smart Schools include:
Internet Access, Solar Power, Modern ICT Center, Robotics and Artificial Intelligence Center, Two Well-Equipped Laboratories, Creative Production Studio, 25 Inclusive Classrooms with Interactive Digital Whiteboards, Android Tablets for Pupil Use.

The World Bank meeting aimed to discuss policy reforms in the basic education sector, and Enugu State’s contributions were well-received. The engaging discussions during the interface may have contributed to Enugu State being nominated by the World Bank to participate in contributing ideas for the proposed policy reform.

“The contributions and impact of ENSUBEB in the meeting remain significant,” Professor Okibe noted.
