
The Executive Chairman of Awgu Local Government Area, Hon Uchenna Joseph Okolo (One Day One Project), emphasized the relevance of washing hands with water, soap, and ash to prevent diseases and infections. He stated this at the Awgu Local Government Area 2024 Global Hand Washing Day held at Obodoakpu Primary School, Agbogugu.

Represented by the Head of Department of Health, Awgu Local Government Area, Mr. Calistus Akpa, the Council helmsman reiterated that hand washing remains a highly effective and cost-efficient method for preventing diseases like cholera, typhoid, diarrhea, pneumonia, and other acute respiratory infections.

In her welcome speech, the Coordinator of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), Awgu Local Government Area, Mrs. Kate Nweze, stated that the Global Hand Washing Day is an international campaign dedicated to raising awareness of hand washing with soap/ash as a key factor in disease prevention. She thanked the Executive Chairman for his support to Awgu Local Government Area WASH Unit.

Mr. Richard Ukaekwe presented a paper titled “Hand Hygiene In Schools And Early Care Education,” highlighting the roles of hand hygiene in preventing infections and emphasizing that hand sanitizers do not eliminate all types of germs, hence the need to regularly wash hands with soap and water.

Chika Mbah, Acting Managing Director of Enugu State Rural Water and Sanitation Agency (ENRUWASA), called for stronger collaboration between the State and Local Governments towards achieving sustainable goals. Represented by Chioma Maduekwe, she expressed His Excellency Peter Ndubuisi Mbah’s administration’s passion for substantially improving healthcare delivery in Enugu State.

Dignitaries present included the President General of Obodoakpu Town Union and former Supervisor for Health, Awgu Local Government Area, Hon Ndubuisi F. Nwaudeigwe; the Principal Secretary to the Executive Chairman of Awgu Local Government Council, Hon Emmanuel Anikwe; and Unit/Programme Officers of the Department of Health, Awgu Local Government Area.

The event featured practical demonstrations of effective hand washing and the presentation of sanitation buckets and soap to participating schools by Awgu Local Government Council.
