
…Charges them to justify Electorate’s Confidence

Sydney Okechukwu Edeh, Chairman of Nkanu East Local Government Area and ALGON Enugu State Chairman, inaugurated the 8th Legislative Council at the council headquarters on November 5, 2024. He urged the newly elected councillors to justify the trust bestowed upon them by their constituents and prioritize community welfare.

Hon. Edeh emphasized collaboration between the legislative and executive arms to enhance governance. He encouraged the councillors to supervise government projects in their wards and keep the community informed about government activities. “We are here to do justice to what is needful. It’s my duty to perform this duty for our councillors to be functional. And we thank our Governor for the opportunity,” he stated, while proclaiming and declaring the beginning of legislative business of 8th Nkanu East LGA legislative Council.


The councillors subsequently elected their principal officers. Hon. Ikechukwu Ani from Ohuani/Onicha Agụ Ward, Amagunze emerged as the council leader, while Hon. Ifeanyi Aninwogbu from Nkerefi Ward 1 was elected as the deputy leader of the legislative council. Other principal officers include Hon. Francis Nwankwo Ugbawka Ward 1 majority leader, Hon. Ogbu Percy of Amechi Idodo/Oruku Ward deputy majority leader, Hon. Mrs. Otenyi Augusta Ukamaka of Owo Ward chief whip, and Hon. Ukpaibi Innocent of Mburubu deputy chief whip.


In his acceptance speech, Hon. Ani, the new leader of the House, pledged to lead with integrity, promising to foster unity within the council and prioritize the welfare of their constituents. He emphasized that the legislative council will be committed to enacting policies that would drive development and improve the lives of the people.

The highlight of the occasion was the administering of the oath of office and allegiance to the councillors by the Clerk of the legislative council. The event was witnessed by Hon. Nnamdi Nwafor, zonal chairman of PDP in Enugu, Hon. Paul Okwor, the deputy chairman of Nkanu East LGA, Prince Ifeanyi Onuoha, among others.


Chairman Hon. Sydney Okechukwu Edeh congratulated all the councillors from the 14 wards and charged them to justify the confidence reposed on them by the electorate.

He expressed optimism that the new leadership would work diligently to advance the growth of the local government area, as well called for synergy and total cooperation between the Executive arm and the legislative arm to move the LGA to an enviable height.
