NIGERIA, INDIA REINFORCE STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIP, VOW TO BOOST ECONOMIC, DEFENCE, HEALTH, AND FOOD SECURITY TIES

Nigeria and India are strengthening their strategic partnership, focusing on key areas including economic development, defense, healthcare, and food security. This renewed commitment follows President Bola Tinubu’s 2023 visit to India, which yielded significant agreements.

Nigeria’s Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Muhammed Bello Matawalle, reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening bilateral ties with India in defense cooperation. The areas of mutual military cooperation include intelligence sharing, joint training, and other support for Nigeria’s drive to end insecurity.

During Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s state visit to Nigeria, the two leaders jointly presided over expanded bilateral and political talks. They agreed to greater collaboration in counterterrorism, maritime security, and intelligence sharing. The Indian government offered to share its expertise in renewable energy, particularly solar power, and Nigeria became a signatory to the International Solar Alliance (ISA) in 2017.

Prime Minister Modi identified terrorism, separatism, piracy, and drug trafficking as major challenges and said the two countries will continue to work together to deal with them. Modi also described the around 60,000-strong Indian expatriate community as a key pillar of India-Nigeria relations and thanked Tinubu for ensuring their welfare.

Nigeria and India will deepen their collaboration on establishing hospitals, diagnostic centers, and innovative health management systems, with India sharing its COWIN digital platform. The Indian government also extended its commitment to supply high-quality generic pharmaceutical products to Nigeria at economical rates under the Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP) scheme.

The two nations will enhance agriculture collaboration, including agricultural machinery, high-yield seeds, and technical expertise. Nigeria thanked India for providing concessions sought in the supply of rice at the time of their need.

Nigeria and India will also cooperate in other areas, including education, cultural exchanges, and people-to-people contacts. The Indian government offered scholarships to Nigerian students under the e-VBAB scheme, facilitating virtual learning opportunities.

Modi is in Nigeria on the first leg of his three-nation visit at the invitation of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. This visit is the first by an Indian prime minister to Nigeria in 17 years. Nigeria conferred its second-highest national award, the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger, on Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
