The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Enugu State Chapter, recently honored Hon. Prof. Paul Sunday Nnamchi, Member Representing Enugu East/Isi-Uzo Federal Constituency, with the prestigious “Icon of Democracy” award. This recognition, presented during the 2024 Press Week/Annual Lecture, acknowledges his outstanding contributions to legislative excellence, effective representation, and dedication to his constituents and Enugu State.

The event, themed “Journalism in a Developing Economy: The Dignity of Professional Practice,” took place today, December 6, 2024, and was attended by dignitaries, including Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, Executive Governor of Enugu State, who was also honored with the “Icon of Democracy” award, represented by Barr. Lloyd Ekweremadu, Enugu Commissioner for Youth and Sports. Other notable awardees included Senator Osita Ngwu and Hon. Chima Nwatu.

Hon. Prof. Nnamchi’s tenure has been marked by remarkable achievements, including sponsorship of 29 Bills, several impactful motions addressing pressing issues, attraction of projects like classroom blocks, solar-powered street lights, and federal jobs for constituents, and implementation of life-changing projects, such as verifiable university scholarships and computer training for secondary school children.

As Chairman of the Nigeria Irish Legislative Friendship Committee and Deputy Chairman of the South East Development Commission, Hon. Prof. Nnamchi has demonstrated unwavering dedication to community development and inclusive representation. His academic background includes being a fellow of the Institute of Materials, Minerals, and Mining (FIMMM), United Kingdom, and member of the Science Council.

Hon. Prof. Nnamchi is a renowned scholar, fellow of the Institute of Materials, Minerals, and Mining (FIMMM), United Kingdom, and member of the Science Council. His academic brilliance complements his legislative acumen. He is the Pioneer Head of the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN). Prof. Nnamchi has held many foreign and local scholarly appointments. He has also had a few opportunities to highlight his work to a broader audience, and his work has been publicised on various platforms, including, Royal Academy of Engineering, United Kingdom and Max Planck’s institutes in Germany, among others.

Responding to the award, Hon. Prof. Nnamchi dedicated it to God and his constituents, thanking the journalists for the honor. “This award validates our mantra, ‘Let’s do it better,'” he said. “It encourages me to continue striving for excellence and representing my constituents effectively. I dedicate this award to the people of Enugu East/Isi-Uzo Federal Constituency, whose tireless efforts and prayers have yielded this result.”

The NUJ Enugu State Chapter Chairman, Comrade Sam Udekwe, praised Hon. Prof. Nnamchi’s contributions to legislative excellence and nation-building. “We proudly recognize Hon. Prof. Nnamchi for his outstanding achievements,” he said.
