The campaign, which was launched with great fervor in Enugu and extended across all 17 local government areas through the wives of the local government chairman, has left a trail of empowerment, awareness, and hope for the women and girls in the state.

In Nkanu East Local Government Area, hosted by the ALGON Chairlady, Mrs. Rita Edeh, the First Lady led impactful conversations and action plans aimed at ending violence against women and girls, while a large gathering of women benefited from various empowerment initiatives. Mrs. Edeh commended the wife of the governor for championing such a visionary initiative. Chairladies from Nkanu West, Udenu, and other LGAs also graced the event.

Igbo-Eze South witnessed the distribution of food items, grassroots engagement, and a medical outreach. The wife of the council chairman, Barr. Empress Ugo-Ferdinand, rallied the support of traditional leaders, community organizations, and political stakeholders to create a unified front against gender-based violence.

The people of Awgu Local Government Area also gave a warm reception to the First Lady’s team. Residents of various LGAs, including Udenu, Nkanu West, Enugu East, Nsukka, Ezeagu, Uzo-uwani, Oji River, Igbo-Eze North, Igbo-Etiti, Udi, and Enugu South, all benefited from the campaign.

At each stop, Mrs. Mbah delivered powerful messages emphasizing the need for education, economic empowerment, and legal protections for women and girls. “This campaign is about more than awareness. It is about inspiring real change ensuring that every woman and girl in Enugu can live without fear and fulfill her potential,” stated her representative during one of the events.

Her Excellency’s passion and commitment were evident throughout the campaign, as her team tirelessly advocated for systemic change and community-driven solutions.

In Nkanu West, over 5,000 women were empowered with food items, wrappers, clothes, cash gifts, toiletries, and other household items as part of their Christmas packages. Medical outreach programs were also conducted in various local governments, including Nkanu West and Igbo-Eze South, where women were diagnosed, treated, and sensitized on health education.

The First Lady also announced plans for follow-up programs, including skill acquisition schemes for women, support for survivors, and stronger collaboration with law enforcement to address gender-based violence.

The Chairlady of Nkanu East Local Government Council, Mrs. Rita Edeh, and other council leaders played pivotal roles in supporting the campaign. Mrs. Edeh described the initiative as “a movement close to her heart” and called on every stakeholder to sustain the momentum created by the First Lady.

While the campaign draws to a close, the people of Enugu State have applauded the First Lady for her commitment to ending violence against women. Her efforts have not only raised awareness but also fostered a deeper understanding of the role individuals and communities must play in eradicating this menace.

The campaign’s impact is already being felt, with many communities pledging to take concrete steps to protect women and girls. Traditional rulers committed to reinforcing cultural values that uphold respect and equality, while local organizations vowed to intensify advocacy and provide support for survivors.

The First Lady’s initiative has also inspired hope for the future, as she announced plans for the establishment of resource centers across the state to provide counseling, legal aid, and vocational training for victims of gender-based violence.

The 16 Days of Activism may have concluded, but the legacy of the First Lady’s campaign is set to endure, inspiring lasting change and laying the foundation for a brighter, more equitable future in Enugu State.
