As the clock ticks down on the year 2024, the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has taken a retrospective look at the challenges faced by Nigerians, describing it as an “Anno Horribilis” – a year of horror.

“The year 2024 has been a particularly difficult one for Nigerians,” the statement read. “The phenomenal rise in the prices of petroleum products, inflation, unsold inventories in our factories, unemployment, and other economic negatives have all contributed to the exacerbation of social tensions in the country.”
The NUJ also noted that 2024 was a challenging year for journalists, with increased attacks and harassment from state and non-state actors. “As journalists, we have faced numerous challenges in the discharge of our duties, including attacks and harassment from those who seek to suppress the truth,” the statement said.
Despite the challenges, the NUJ remains optimistic about 2025, calling on Nigeria’s leaders to prioritize national development and the welfare of the people. “As we move into 2025, we urge our leaders to rise above the mediocrity and negative sentiments that have characterized the discharge of their responsibilities,” the statement read.
The NUJ emphasized the importance of a national ethos for governance and development, driven by the Nigerian people. “Nations are built on the back of policies that have undergone proper rigor during the period of formulation and laced with practical consideration for the welfare of the people,” the statement said.
The union believes that Nigerians have the potential to become a stronger political force, capable of overcoming divisive elements and working towards a brighter future. “We have seen glimpses of this potential in the past, and we are confident that with the right leadership and mindset, Nigerians can overcome the challenges that have held us back for so long,” the statement said.
As the country moves into 2025, the NUJ reaffirms its commitment to holding politicians accountable and promoting the welfare of the people. “We will continue to play our role as watchdogs of society, holding those in power accountable for their actions and promoting the interests of the Nigerian people,” the statement said.
The NUJ wishes Nigerians a prosperous and optimistic new year, with the hope that 2025 will be a better year for all. “We look forward to a year of progress, development, and growth, and we are committed to playing our part in making that vision a reality,” the statement concluded.
