…Move Aimed at Compelling Government to Reverse Decision
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe! The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has announced plans to stage a nationwide protest on February 4, 2025, against the proposed 50 percent increase in telecom tariffs approved by the Federal Government.
The decision to embark on the protest was reached at the ongoing National Administrative Council (NAC) meeting of the NLC, according to sources within the union.
In a statement issued by NLC President, Joe Ajaero, the union expressed its strong opposition to the tariff hike, describing it as “a clear assault on the welfare of Nigerian workers and the masses.”
Ajaero argued that the increase would exacerbate the economic hardship faced by Nigerians, particularly workers who already spend a significant portion of their wages on telecom charges.
“The NLC calls on the government, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), and the National Assembly to stop the implementation of this ill-advised hike and engage in a reasonable conversation around the issue,” Ajaero said.
The union has urged Nigerian workers and the masses to reject the tariff hike and prepare for collective action, including a possible nationwide boycott of telecom services.
The NLC’s move is the latest in a series of reactions to the proposed tariff hike, which has been widely criticized by Nigerians and experts who argue that it will have far-reaching negative consequences for the economy and citizens.
The Federal Government has yet to respond to the NLC’s statement, but sources indicate that the government is under pressure to reconsider the decision.
