ENUGU EAST LGA TAKES PROACTIVE STEPS TO ADDRESS PUBLIC HEALTH CONCERNS

The Enugu East Local Government Area (LGA) has taken a proactive approach to addressing public health concerns, with the Executive Chairman, Engr. Pst. Beloved-Dan Obi Anike, convening a Stakeholders Engagement on Public Health Emergencies, Strategies, and Collaboration.

The meeting, held on Monday, February 3, 2025, brought together key stakeholders, including health workers, community leaders, and government officials, to discuss strategies for preventing and managing public health emergencies.

According to sources, the meeting was a response to the recent outbreak of Cholera disease in Ezza Nkwubor community and sandfly cases in Abakpa Nike, both in Enugu East LGA.

Anike’s administration has prioritized healthcare, with notable achievements such as the approval of 5 Type 1 PHC centers in the LGA, the foundation laying of healthcare centers at Neke Uno and Obinagu Nike communities, and the profiling of the elderly for health insurance programs.

The engagement meeting was a success, with stakeholders assuring their readiness to collaborate for a healthy Enugu East LGA. Attendees included notable figures such as Hon. Dr. Yomi Jaye, SPA Health, Executive Secretary, (ENSPHCB), represented by Mrs. Chime, Dr. Ogbodo Okechukwu, State Epidemiologist, Hon. Mrs. Chika Mba, Ag. MD. EN-RUWASSA, Dr. Mrs. Joy Uduji, and the 10th Enugu East Legislative Council, led by Hon. Obumneme Obed Eke.

The Enugu East Traditional Rulers Council, led by HRH Igwe Dr. Emmanuel Ugwu, the Traditional Ruler of Ibagwa Nike Community, also attended the meeting.

In another related development, the Executive Chairman, on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, organized another public health engagement at Ezza Nkwubor community, to sensitize the community members on how to curtail the spread of the Cholera disease.

The Enugu East LGA has also announced plans to conduct an environmental survey to identify areas for borehole construction and toilet building in public places, aligning with the State Government’s Water, Sanitation, and Health (WASH) policy.

Furthermore, Anike has recognized the crucial role of health workers, promising to profile volunteer health workers for remuneration.
