Enugu, Enugu State – In a bid to bridge the gap in youth unemployment and position Enugu State as a key player in the global tech industry, the Enugu State Government, through the Enugu SME Center, has graduated 50 participants from the Enugu SME/AltSchool Training Program.

The six-month hybrid training program, which was conducted in partnership with AltSchool Africa, equipped the youths with practical knowledge in Frontend Web Engineering and Backend Web Engineering. According to industry reports, the demand for frontend and backend developers is on the rise in Nigeria, with frontend developers earning an average annual salary of ₦16.67M and backend developers earning an average annual salary of ₦8.16M.

Speaking at the graduation ceremony, Mr. Arinze Chilo-Offiah, Special Adviser on MSMEs & Digital Economy, said the program was designed to empower young talents with high-demand digital skills that can transform their careers and economic futures. He attributed the success of the program to the vision of H.E. Dr. Peter Mbah, who is committed to building a digitally skilled workforce that will shape the future of Enugu State.

The Enugu SME/AltSchool Training Program is part of the state government’s efforts to reduce youth unemployment, which is currently projected at 5.84% in Nigeria. As the graduates embark on their new careers, industry experts say the program has the potential to make Enugu State a hub for technological innovation and entrepreneurship.

“This program is a step in the right direction,” said Uche Nwobi, a tech industry expert. “By equipping young people with in-demand digital skills, the Enugu State Government is positioning itself as a leader in the tech industry.”

The Enugu SME/AltSchool Training Program is expected to run again later this year, with applications open to young people from across Enugu State.
