Okonkwo, who served as the spokesman for the Labour Party’s presidential campaign team in the 2023 general election, cited the trio’s inability to deliver on their promises and unite the opposition as reasons for his stance.

In an interview on Channels Television’s “Politics Today” programme, Okonkwo emphasized that Nigerian politics demands decisive action to secure mandates. “You must do everything decisively to secure it,” he said. “Unfortunately, nature has bestowed on us the duty that in Nigeria, you will not only win an election but you have to fight for your mandate.”

Okonkwo also criticized the opposition for its failure to collaborate and form alliances. He noted that lawmakers missed an opportunity to produce the speaker and vice speaker in the House of Representatives, despite having more opposition members than the ruling class.

Okonkwo’s comments come on the heels of his resignation from the Labour Party, which he announced on the same day. He cited internal rambles as the reason for his departure and ruled out returning to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

As the 2027 presidential election draws near, Okonkwo’s call for new faces and fresh perspectives in Nigerian politics may resonate with Nigerians seeking change and effective leadership.
