Former President Goodluck Jonathan has condemned the suspension of elected officials in Rivers State by President Bola Tinubu, warning that such actions could tarnish Nigeria’s image. Speaking at the Haske Satumari Foundation Colloquium in Abuja, Jonathan expressed disappointment over the removal of elected officials through a state of emergency proclamation.

Jonathan’s stance comes after President Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers State, suspending Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, Ngozi Odu, and all elected members of the state House of Assembly for six months. The President cited the need to restore stability in the state, which has been embroiled in a political crisis between the governor and lawmakers.

Jonathan emphasized that the actions of key government actors “paint the country in a negative light.” He noted that as a former president, it’s not his norm to comment on political issues, but he felt compelled to speak out after receiving calls from many Nigerians urging him to address the situation in Rivers State.

The former president also highlighted the importance of Nigeria’s image in attracting investments, stressing that the actions of the executive, legislature, and judiciary all play a crucial role in shaping the country’s reputation. Furthermore, Jonathan criticized the situation where an individual can dictate to the judiciary, arguing that it undermines faith in the judicial system.
