The nursing mothers have pledged to champion exclusive breastfeeding and promote its benefits in their communities after receiving health education on the importance of the practice as part of activities marking the 2026 World Breastfeeding Week.

The mothers made the pledge at Ukana Health Centre in Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State during a sensitisation programme organised by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in collaboration with the Broadcasting Corporation of Abia State (BCA). The programme, held under the theme, “Breastfeeding for a Sustainable Start in Life: Strengthen What Works,” formed part of the global campaign observed annually from August 1 to 7.

Resource person, Dr. Hyginus Odo, said exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of life remains one of the most effective ways of ensuring healthy growth and development in children. He explained that breast milk provides all the nutrients and antibodies needed by infants, protects them against common childhood illnesses and also offers significant health benefits to nursing mothers. He urged the women to become advocates by educating other mothers and encouraging them to adopt the practice.

Responding on behalf of the participants, Mrs. Chidinma Enaamu thanked UNICEF and the Broadcasting Corporation of Abia State for the enlightenment programme, describing it as timely and impactful. She appealed to husbands, families and community leaders to support nursing mothers in practising exclusive breastfeeding and pledged that the participants would spread the message throughout their communities.

Another participant, Mrs. Chidimma Ogbaji described exclusive breastfeeding as a safe, hygienic and cost-effective means of giving every child a healthy start in life. The participants unanimously resolved to champion the practice in their communities in support of the objectives of the 2026 World Breastfeeding Week campaign.
