On April 5, 2025, primaries were held by the ruling All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), the All Progressives Congress (APC), and the Labour Party (LP) at various venues in Awka, the state capital.

According to Premium Times, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will pick its candidate on April 8, 2025.

Incumbent Governor Chukwuma Soludo secured the APGA nomination after a smooth primary process at the Dr. Alex Ekwueme Square, Awka.

As the only aspirant, Soludo’s candidacy was confirmed via a unanimous vote from the delegates, with 3,171 of the 3,175 accredited delegates supporting his bid for a second term.

He praised the party’s transparent and structured election process, which adhered to the provisions of the Electoral Act, 2022.

Meanwhile, the Labour Party elected George Moghalu, a former Managing Director of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), as their candidate.

Moghalu triumphed over his opponent, John Nwosu, securing 573 votes against 19.

In his acceptance speech, Moghalu emphasized the need for unity within the party to defeat Soludo in the general election.

He highlighted his public service experience and expressed confidence in turning Anambra into a state of prosperity by harnessing its vast human and natural resources.

On the APC side, Nicholas Ukachukwu, a former member of the House of Representatives, emerged victorious in the party’s primary with 1,455 votes, defeating Valentine Ozigbo and other contenders.

In his victory speech, Ukachukwu vowed to deliver Anambra to the APC, drawing on his long-standing influence in the state’s politics.

The PDP, initially set to hold its primary on April 5, 2025, postponed the event to April 8, citing the need for additional administrative processes to ensure a smooth election.

INEC has set the election date for November 8, 2025, and all political parties are expected to complete their primaries by April 10, 2025.

With these major contenders now in the race, the stage is set for a fierce contest in the upcoming governorship election, as the people of Anambra prepare to choose their next leader.
