Abdullahi Umar Ganduje has stepped down from his position as the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), with immediate effect.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe! In his resignation letter submitted to the party’s leadership, the former Kano State governor cited health reasons as the primary motivation behind his decision, stating that he needed to focus on his personal well-being.
Ganduje, who assumed the role in August 2023 following the resignation of Abdullahi Adamu, leaves at a time when the ruling party is grappling with internal crises. His tenure as chairman was overshadowed by leadership tussles, legal battles, and growing dissatisfaction among key stakeholders.
While Ganduje officially attributed his resignation to health concerns, multiple sources within the party suggest that mounting political pressure and unresolved internal grievances may have influenced his exit. His leadership had come under intense scrutiny, particularly over allegations of financial mismanagement and controversial fees imposed on aspirants during the FCT area council elections.
Legal troubles also trailed his time in office. In April 2024, a Kano State High Court issued an ex parte order restraining him from parading himself as a member of the APC, following a suit filed by some state party officials. Although another legal challenge brought by the APC North Central Forum seeking his removal was dismissed by a Federal High Court in Abuja, discontent within the party leadership continued to grow.
As of the time of filing this report, the APC has yet to issue an official statement confirming Ganduje’s resignation or outlining the next steps for leadership transition.
Ganduje’s departure marks a significant development in the ongoing realignment within Nigeria’s ruling party, raising questions about the future direction of the APC ahead of upcoming political contests.
