In a bold and inspiring move towards environmental responsibility, the Debe Enugu Ocha (Keep Enugu Clean) campaign, spearheaded by Engr. Ugwuagbo PaulHenry, held a successful sensitization programme in Abakpa on Saturday, July 26, 2025. The awareness drive spanned from Liberty Junction to Abakpa Head Bridge, mobilizing both residents and local leaders to champion community cleanliness.

The event saw the active participation of key stakeholders including Hon. Basil Aniekwe and Hon. Osita Ani—councilors representing Abakpa Wards 1 and 2 respectively—as well as Hon. Okechukwu Igbokwe, Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Enugu East L.G.A.

Engr. Ugwuagbo, who has been at the forefront of the Debe Enugu Ocha initiative, echoed the vision of Governor Peter Mbah by rallying the people of Abakpa to embrace a community-led sanitation model. He emphasized the importance of collective responsibility in maintaining a clean environment, highlighting the monthly clean-up schedule set for the last Saturday of each month from 7:00am to 10:00am.

Addressing the crowd, Engr. Ugwuagbo stated, “Cleanliness must become a culture embedded in our everyday life. A clean market and living environment reflects our values and spirituality—neatness is indeed next to holiness.”

He further announced that starting next month, a dedicated enforcement team would begin monitoring the area to ensure compliance with anti-littering laws. Offenders caught disposing of waste improperly—whether from vehicles or on the streets—will face legal penalties as stipulated under Enugu State law.

The sensitization team also engaged market men and women, educating them on the proper disposal of waste and the importance of using ESWAMA-branded waste bags to streamline collection efforts by ESWAMA operatives. Traders were advised that failure to comply could result in avoidable fines or prosecution.

Engr. Ugwuagbo extended heartfelt appreciation to Hon. Beloved Dan Anike, Executive Chairman of Enugu East L.G.A, for his steadfast support in ensuring the success of the program.

With this community-driven effort gaining momentum, Debe Enugu Ocha continues to drive home the message that “Enugu State must be clean”—a fitting anthem for a state committed to a brighter, healthier future.

Indeed, our tomorrow is here.
