In a decisive move to address the growing challenges of urban flooding and environmental sanitation, the Enugu State Government has introduced a regulated waste disposal schedule across the city and other urban areas.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe! The directive, issued through the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, comes in response to increasing concerns over the activities of scavengers and the indiscriminate dumping of refuse into drainage channels, particularly during rainfall. These acts have contributed significantly to the blockage of water channels and recurring floods in several parts of the state.
According to the public service announcement signed by Prof. Sam C. Ugwu, Honourable Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, the Enugu State Waste Management Authority (ESWAMA) is currently undertaking door-to-door waste collection, ensuring that refuse is removed directly from households in covered areas.
However, for areas not yet included in the door-to-door system—such as markets and some public spaces—the government has now introduced a daily waste disposal timeframe as part of wider efforts to streamline waste management and enhance urban cleanliness.
Residents are now required to dispose of waste at designated dump sites only between 5:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. daily. ESWAMA evacuation trucks will begin clearing the dump sites from 10:00 p.m., guaranteeing that refuse is removed overnight and that a clean city is restored by morning.
“This initiative is part of our broader strategy to rid Enugu of unsightly refuse heaps, reduce flooding, and promote a healthier living environment,” said Prof. Ugwu. He also warned that offenders will be arrested and prosecuted under the State Environmental and Climate Protection Law.
The Ministry urged all residents—especially those in urban centers—to cooperate fully with the new directive and report any breaches that may undermine the city’s environmental goals.
“Together, we can build a cleaner, healthier, and flood-free Enugu,” the Commissioner added.
The announcement, dated July 22, 2025, underscores the government’s renewed commitment to sustainable environmental management and urban sanitation.
