Her passing was confirmed on Thursday by fellow actor Akinola ‘Segbowe’ Akano, who took to Instagram to express his grief and disbelief. Sharing screenshots of their final conversations and heartfelt photos, Segbowe revealed that Omotola had recently assured him she was feeling better.
“Motola! Strange but I tried checking on you at the wee hours of that morning. You said you were FINE & BACK! This is a rude shock, Omotola! Journey well, sister. God be with your family,” he wrote.
The cause of her death has not yet been made public.
Veteran actor Odunlade Adekola, who played a key role in Omotola’s early career, also confirmed the tragic news via his Instagram story with a brief but emotional message:
“Jesus Christ. RIP Omotola.”
Actress Ashabi Simple, known for her connection to singer Portable, also expressed her heartbreak over the loss, recalling their recent encounter on a film set.
“I’m shocked. You’re one of the best actors I’m rooting for. I saw you earlier this year while shooting Deputy, and we promised to work together again. You laboured but didn’t wait to reap. I remember nights you encouraged me with advice and hope. Most of your wishes didn’t even come true. GOD, we can’t question you. Death is deep,” she wrote.
Omotola Odunsi’s journey into Nollywood began in 2018 after a successful audition with Odunlade Adekola Films Production. Prior to that, she had worked as a credit officer at a government-owned bank, a job she left in 2019 to pursue her passion for acting—with the full support of her family.
She quickly became a recognizable face in Yoruba cinema, with standout performances in films such as Ajanaku, Darkness, Ogo Oluwa, Dagogo, Doctor Adunni, President Kuti, Ifedayo, Amonata, and Lisabi: The Uprising.
Known not only for her on-screen talent but also for her warmth and humility off-screen, Omotola Odunsi leaves behind a legacy of dedication, grace, and inspiration to many in the film industry.
Her death marks a significant loss for Nollywood and her many fans across Nigeria and beyond.
