Former Kano State Governor and 2023 presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has dismissed widespread speculation that he is preparing to abandon the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!Speaking at the NNPP’s 9th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Abuja, Kwankwaso described the rumours of his imminent defection as misplaced and misleading.
“Many people thought today we will announce whether I will stay in NNPP or go to another party or join some individuals. That was not the intention of the meeting. We have our party, and we are comfortable and happy,” the former governor said, addressing party leaders and members.
Kwankwaso, who also served as Minister of Defence, reaffirmed his commitment to the NNPP but noted that the party remains open to engaging other political stakeholders in the build-up to 2027.
“We believe we have something to offer at the highest leadership level of this country. We are ready to talk to anybody, but any negotiation will be collective,” he stated.
In a major highlight of the meeting, Kwankwaso was officially affirmed as the NNPP’s presidential flagbearer for the 2027 contest.
NNPP National Chairman, Dr. Ajuji Ahmed, who announced the decision in his opening remarks, described Kwankwaso as a “visionary leader” whose political experience and widespread grassroots support would anchor the party’s quest for national leadership.
