The veteran politician made the announcement while appearing on Beyond the Headlines, a widely followed programme on Freedom Square TV, anchored by Uchenna Cyril Anioke.

Okorie, who has been an unwavering voice in Nigeria’s democratic journey since the country’s return to civil rule in 1999, explained that his decision was the outcome of deep reflection on the prevailing political realities in the nation. He emphasized that while he is stepping aside from active partisan engagement, he will remain active in national discourse, advocacy, and the struggle for equity and justice for the Igbo people.

According to him, “My part in partisanship is over. I have voluntarily discontinued partisanship in order to be in a position to play new roles that God has asked me to play in the remainder of my life.”

Okorie stressed that his withdrawal should not be mistaken for silence but rather seen as a repositioning to play the role of an elder statesman and political strategist outside the limitations of party politics.

As one of the key architects of APGA, and having later contributed significantly to other political platforms, Chief Okorie reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to Nigeria’s unity, restructuring, and the political empowerment of the South-East region.

He also urged the younger generation to embrace leadership with courage, vision, and unity of purpose. He warned that lamentations without bold, strategic action will not secure political power for the Igbo people.
