Enugu Govt Issues 5-Day Ultimatum on Abandoned Vehicles, Roadside Mechanics

According to both agencies, several road corridors have been illegally converted into makeshift mechanic workshops where activities such as oil changes, fuel handling, welding, and other unregulated operations are carried out directly on road surfaces. The government warned that these actions weaken asphalt, damage road structures, obstruct traffic flow, and pose grave risks to road users.

The authorities noted that the presence of abandoned vehicles and unauthorised roadside activities has created avoidable traffic congestion, environmental hazards, and safety threats across Enugu State.

In a joint statement issued on Wednesday, the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure and ECTDA announced a 5-day notice to all vehicle owners, mechanics, and individuals currently occupying road verges, shoulders, and other unauthorised areas along public roads.

The notice mandates the immediate removal of all abandoned and broken-down vehicles, makeshift mechanic workstations, and roadside activities that cause pollution or damage to the road. The government reiterated that using public roads for trading, long-term parking, mechanical repairs, oil changes, or any activity that obstructs traffic is strictly prohibited.

The statement further revealed that a coordinated enforcement operation will begin on Tuesday, 25th November 2025. During the exercise, all abandoned, obstructive, or improperly stationed vehicles will be removed. Violators will face sanctions, including:

1. Fines

2. Towing and recovery fees

3. Prosecution under relevant laws of Enugu State

Mechanics, artisans, traders, and all affected individuals have been strongly advised to relocate their operations to government-approved designated areas.

The Ministry of Works and Infrastructure and ECTDA reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining clean, safe, orderly, and motorable roads for all residents of Enugu State.
