Presided over by the National Chairperson, Comrade Aisha K. Bura, the conference focused on the theme “Amplifying Change: The Media, Legislation, and the Advancement of Women.” Guest lecturer and Clerk/Head of Service of the Imo State House of Assembly, Chinelo Emeghara, Esq., charged women journalists to deepen public sensitization on gender-focused legislation to ensure implementation in the interest of women and children.

Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma—represented by Deputy Governor Lady Chinyere Ekomaru—underscored the critical role of the media in strengthening transparency and accountability in governance. He urged NAWOJ members to continue championing equity, inclusion, and women’s participation in leadership.

Other dignitaries who addressed participants included the wife of the Imo State Governor, Barr. Chioma Uzodimma; National President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Comrade Alhassan Yahaya; Commissioner for Information, Public Orientation and Strategy, Hon. Declan Emelumba; and the National President of the League of Women Voters (NILOWV), Mrs. Irene Awunah.

The Council reviewed NAWOJ’s programmes, achievements, challenges, and national advocacy efforts, particularly the “Her Seat in Parliament” campaign executed in partnership with NILOWV. Members also deliberated extensively on national issues and challenges affecting women in the profession.

Following its discussions, NEC issued the following resolutions:

1. Appreciation to Imo State Government: NEC expresses profound gratitude to Governor Hope Uzodimma for hosting delegates from across the 36 states and the FCT, and for the warm hospitality enjoyed throughout the conference.

2. Commendation of Infrastructure Development: NEC commends the Uzodimma-led administration for ongoing infrastructural projects in Imo State and pledges NAWOJ’s partnership in projecting the state’s development strides.

3. Condemnation of Rising Insecurity: NEC strongly condemns the escalating insecurity nationwide, including the recent killings and abductions in Kwara State, the kidnap of schoolgirls in Kebbi State, and increasing cases of child abduction and the rape of minors—boys and girls—particularly in northern Nigeria.
The Council describes these incidents as grave threats to national security and urges security agencies to intensify intelligence operations, rescue victims swiftly, and bring perpetrators to justice.

4. Solidarity With Victims: NEC stands firmly with mothers and families whose children have been abducted or harmed, stressing that every Nigerian child deserves full protection, safety, and dignity.

5. Alarm Over Deplorable Roads and Highway Insecurity: NEC expresses deep concern over the worsening condition of major highways across the country, noting that poor road infrastructure combined with insecurity has turned many routes into death traps.
The Council warns that the situation heightens risks of robbery, kidnapping, and fatal accidents, especially for women, while crippling economic activity and delaying emergency response. It calls on Federal and State Governments to urgently rehabilitate major roads, strengthen security patrols, deploy surveillance technologies, and ensure safer mobility for all Nigerians.

6. Appreciation to NUJ Leadership: NEC appreciates NUJ President, Comrade Alhassan Yahaya, and his delegation for their solidarity throughout the meeting and reaffirms its commitment to deepening collaboration with the NUJ and other media bodies.

7. Commitment to Professional Excellence: NEC pledges to work closely with partners to promote ethical journalism, strengthen professional standards, and enhance the leadership and visibility of women journalists nationwide.
