The camp, previously closed due to deteriorating infrastructure, is currently undergoing a comprehensive upgrade aimed at restoring it to operational standards. The intervention by the Enugu State Government is expected to reposition the facility as a functional orientation centre for corps members posted to the state.

Key features of the project include the construction of a 2,000-capacity multi-purpose hall, 500-capacity hostel accommodation, newly built staff quarters, a solar-powered borehole system, and access roads equipped with solar street lights leading to the camp. Officials say the upgrades are designed to meet modern infrastructure standards and improve the overall welfare of corps members.

During the inspection tour, Okolo described the project as a significant step toward youth development and local economic growth. He commended Governor Mbah’s administration for prioritising infrastructure renewal across the state, noting that the revival of the camp would enhance socio-economic activities in Awgu and surrounding communities.

The Awgu NYSC Camp serves as a strategic orientation facility for young graduates participating in Nigeria’s one-year national service scheme. Its rehabilitation is expected to reduce pressure on other orientation camps in the state and improve service delivery during orientation exercises.

Okolo reaffirmed the local government’s support for the state’s development agenda, stating that collaboration between state and local authorities remains essential for sustainable progress.

The inspection highlights ongoing efforts by the Enugu State Government to invest in public infrastructure and youth-focused initiatives within the state.
