The project, initiated by the Chairman of Nsukka Local Government Area, Hon. Engr. Jude Chinedu Asogwa, is one of the key development efforts within the council. Recent work at the site includes the excavation of drainage systems designed to address flooding and erosion challenges that have affected the area over time.

In addition, road demarcation within the market commenced this week, providing a structured layout expected to enhance movement and organization. The development is anticipated to create a more conducive environment for traders and customers when the market becomes fully operational.

The market serves a cluster of surrounding communities, including University Estate Nsukka, Nguru Nsukka, Obimo, Agbani, and Odoru Nsukka. Its location is considered strategic for commercial activities, with expectations that it will function as a central hub for trade in the area.

Residents of nearby communities have welcomed the ongoing work, particularly the drainage construction, which they say will help reduce flooding along the Obimo–Nsukka–Uzo-Uwani road corridor. Some residents who visited the site expressed optimism that the project would provide lasting solutions to environmental challenges in the area.

The Nsukka International Market is also part of broader development plans by the Enugu State Government to stimulate economic growth. The project is expected to contribute to increased commercial activities and improved livelihoods.

Authorities have reiterated that traders displaced by the construction of the modern transport terminal at Ogige Market will be given priority in the allocation of shops in the new market.

Construction work is ongoing, with the local government expressing commitment to completing the project within a short timeframe.
