The Enugu State Government has intensified efforts toward the development of the New Enugu City, a landmark initiative aimed at redefining urban living and setting a new benchmark for integrated infrastructure delivery in Nigeria.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe! The Honourable Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Engr. Ben Osy Okoh, FNSE, F.ASCE, described the project as a visionary and transformative undertaking that transcends conventional residential development.
“Many people think we are building an estate, but this is not an estate, it is a city. While the existing Enugu metropolis spans approximately 14,000 hectares, the New Enugu City covers about 10,000 hectares. This reflects the true scale of what is being developed, an entirely new urban centre,” he stated.
He disclosed that significant progress has been recorded, particularly in the provision of critical access infrastructure. According to him, Lot 1 of the primary access road into the city, measuring 6.5 kilometres, has been completed up to binder course, while work on the wearing course is currently ongoing. Additionally, two bridges have been constructed along the corridor to enhance connectivity.
The Commissioner further revealed that construction has commenced on the network of secondary and tertiary roads within the first phase of the project. He added that plans are underway to extend the primary access road from 6.5 kilometres to 17 kilometres under Phase II.
The New Enugu City is being developed as a fully integrated urban environment, featuring modern infrastructure systems designed to meet global standards. Electrical and telecommunications ducts are being installed underground, while water systems and other essential services are seamlessly incorporated into the city’s design to ensure efficiency, sustainability, and improved urban aesthetics.
He also noted that the master plan includes provisions for a modern monorail system to enhance mobility and support an efficient transportation network within the city.
“Our objective is to deliver infrastructure that will endure and continue to serve generations. This project reflects our commitment to quality, durability, and forward-thinking urban development,” he said.
The Commissioner emphasized that the level of activity on-site clearly demonstrates the government’s commitment to the successful delivery of the project.
“If you visit the project site, you will see the scale, the quality, and the level of progress being made. This is not just a vision, it is a reality already taking shape,” he added.
The New Enugu City project represents a major milestone in the state’s urban development agenda and positions Enugu as a forward-looking and investment-friendly destination.
“This is a game changer for infrastructure development in Enugu State. We are building a city for the future,” the Commissioner affirmed.
