A new phase in the political trajectory of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Enugu State has begun with the emergence of Professor Austin Akubue as State Chairman, following a congress held on Saturday, April 11, 2026, at Rochas Okorocha’s Events Arena in Enugu.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe! The congress, supervised by a committee constituted by the party’s national secretariat, is widely viewed by stakeholders as a pivotal moment in the effort to consolidate the ADC’s structure and reposition it as a viable platform for governance in the state. The committee was chaired by Dr. C.C. Okeke, with Barr. Joy Chioma Anyanwu serving as secretary.
Prof. Akubue’s emergence drew attendance from prominent political figures, including former Enugu State Governor Okwesilieze Nwodo and Senator Gilbert Nnaji, alongside a broad spectrum of party stakeholders and aspirants. Their presence underscored growing alignment within sections of the party around a reform-oriented agenda.
In his acceptance speech, Prof. Akubue described the moment as both “symbolic and foundational,” emphasizing the need for unity, strategic planning, and a departure from violent political practices. He pledged to strengthen internal cohesion and expand the party’s grassroots presence across all local government areas.
“We are laying a foundation to confront policies that do not serve the people. This is a moment to build a solid platform for a better Nigeria,” he said.
He further stressed the importance of merit-based participation, assuring party members and aspirants of fairness and equal opportunity under his leadership. According to him, intellectual engagement and professionalism must replace thuggery and divisive politics.
Addressing the socio-economic situation in the state, the new chairman expressed concern over the burden on citizens, citing taxation and economic hardship as key issues requiring urgent attention. He called for a shift toward idea-driven governance and inclusive leadership.
“A new political culture is necessary—one anchored on innovation, fairness, and accountability,” he added.
Prof. Akubue also extended an olive branch to aggrieved stakeholders within the party, signaling a commitment to reconciliation and inclusiveness.
In a separate remark, former Enugu State House of Assembly leader, Rt. Hon. Dr. Ikechukwu Ezeugwu, described the congress as “a new beginning” for the party. He reiterated the ADC’s stance against electoral malpractice, warning against any attempt to undermine the will of the electorate in future elections.
Similarly, Senator Nnaji commended party supporters for their participation and urged continued unity, particularly among members from Enugu East Senatorial Zone, noting that internal disagreements are part of the democratic process.
The newly constituted state executive reflects a broad-based leadership structure. Prof. Akubue will serve alongside Prof. Den Chris Onah as Deputy Chairman, with zonal vice chairmen representing Enugu East, North, and West senatorial districts.
Other key positions filled include state secretary, treasurer, publicity secretary, organizing secretary, legal adviser, and youth and women leaders, among others. The congress also produced national delegates from across the state’s senatorial zones, further strengthening the party’s organizational framework ahead of future electoral engagements.
Political observers note that the outcome of the congress signals an attempt by the ADC to consolidate internal structures and present a more coordinated front as Nigeria approaches the 2027 general elections.
